Good Luck to All Competitors!!

This year's race is right around the corner.  It is shaping up to be one of the best Head of the Ohio regattas ever!

DETOUR ALERT! - For those of you coming to Washington’s Landing, please keep in mind that the entry onto the 31st Street Bridge is closed from Route 28.  Please plan accordingly if you are using a GPS.  Alternate/Trailer Friendly directions to Washington's Landing have been provided on our Boathouse Locations & Directions page linked below.

Registration Compliance:  All competitors must have a signed USRowing Waiver on file and all crews must submit an Equipment Compliance Form (see Race Packet) in order to complete Registration and pick up your Bow Numbers.

Athlete Drop Off:  We would recommend that all large groups coordinate a drop off for their athletes before parking so that they know they’re on time and so that they don’t overwhelm the shuttles. The drop off will occur on the same road where the boathouse and trailers will be, but just before the road closure on Washington's Landing that will occur on race day.

Shuttles:  TRRA will provide shuttles on race day that run from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm. We will have shuttles running from the Smallman and 15th St. Parking Lot advertised in the race packet to Washington’s Landing (WL). For those who are car topping and rowing out of Millvale, you should be able to park there, but if you want to come to Washington’s Landing, there will be a shuttle running from boathouse to boathouse the same hours.

Chevy Promotional Shuttles & Test Drives benefiting Project Bundle-Up:  In addition to the shuttles provided by TRRA, Chevy will offer free rides from the 15th and Smallman Street parking lot to the regatta entrance at 800 Waterfront Drive.  Catch the Chevy Shuttle from 5-10 a.m. for a spin in new vehicles including the Tahoe Hybrid and Cruze Eco.  Then from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., visit us near the concession area (300 Waterfront Drive) for the chance to drive one of our vehicles, including the eco-friendly, new electric car, the Chevy Volt.  Chevy will make a donation to the “Project Bundle-Up” initiative, which raises funds to provide children and seniors with new winter outerwear, for every attendee that rides in or drives a vehicles during the afternoon!  Drivers must be at least 18 years of age.  Chevy Shuttles will run again in the afternoon from 2:30-4:30 p.m. Simply meet us at the drop-off point (800 Waterfront Drive), and Chevy will give you a lift back to the offsite parking area.  For additional information, please visit www.drivingthenortheast.com.

Bike Rentals:  Golden Triangle Bike Rental will offer 20% off their hourly or daily rates for anyone who stops in and says they are going to ride the trail and watch the races.

New Venue for 2011!

The Head of the Ohio venue is moving to Washington’s Landing.  Washington’s Landing is an island on the Allegheny River and home of the Three Rivers Rowing Lambert Boathouse.  It is also located near TRRA’s Millvale Boathouse. The race will be run on the same section of the Allegheny River, but will reverse direction, starting near Point State Park and ending at Washington’s Landing. We are excited about the new location and the options it provides.  All boats will be launching and returning to either the Lambert or Millvale Boathouse docks.

The 2011 start line is located just above Point State Park and the Ft Duquesne Bridge on the south shore of the Allegheny River, just about 500 meters from the confluence of the Allegheny, Monongahela, and Ohio rivers in downtown Pittsburgh. The actual start line will be marked by a tent located on the trail beside the river. Boats will be funneled through the Ft Duquesne Bridge (I279) abutment in preparation to pass the start line.

The 2.6 mile course races upstream to just below the 40th Street Bridge. The actual finish line is in front of a mooring cell located near the top of Washington’s Landing (formerly the start line) on the right descending bank of the island.  For the Head of the Ohio’s history, this section of the Allegheny River has been an excellent course, marked by rowing under nine bridges.   As the course passes along the south shore of the Allegheny River, spectators can view the race from the Three Rivers Heritage Trail.  In addition, viewing can take place from many of the city's bridges.
